It's no secret that Platform Beer Co. in Ohio City is one of the city's hottest breweries right now. Founded just two years ago in 2014, you can now find beautifully designed cans of Platform beer all over the city's grocery stores. You'll also find their brews on tap at local restaurants. But the best place to enjoy a Platform beer is on their patio or in their tasting room in Ohio City.
If you still believe that the only fun place to go in Ohio City are the bars by West Side Market, think again! Located on the corner of Lorain and W. 41st, Platform is one of several establishments that is reviving this historic area on Lorain Avenue. Looking for a way to kill a Saturday afternoon with friends? I recommend going to Jack Flaps for brunch (get the Lemon Curd pancakes), then hop across the street to Platform to enjoy a few brewskis on their patio.
I've been to Platform several times, with Balance & Brews and The Cleveland Brew Bus, but I'd never sat on their patio. Outside, we found dozens of large picnic tables and plants that transformed the space into an urban oasis. We claimed our turf, then headed to the bar to order some drinks. The New Cleveland Palesner is excellent, as are the beers from their "Cherimoya Project" line. I was disappointed by the Orange Blossom Gose, perhaps because I expected something more crisp and sweet since it is made with Old City Soda. Overall, their draft list is stacked with fantastic beers, from both Platform and other breweries.
Our official Bar League mascot, Bella, was thrilled that Platform is dog friendly, indoors & out. One of the bartenders even brought over a water bowl for her. You can follow Bella and her adventures on Instagram (@doglifeincle), and on my friend Amanda's blog.
While Platform does not serve their own food, they have partnered with local chefs and restaurants to offer food to their patrons each night. Chef Dicks' Kitchen sets up shop on Wednesdays, and their BBQ looked delicious. My friends had nothing but good things to say about it.
Lastly, something that makes Platform truly unique is their brew-pub incubator program. You may know that the owner of Platform, Paul Benner, also owns The Cleveland Brew Shop, a homebrew supply shop that is right across the street. As noted on Platform's website, Paul was "inspired by the many loyal customers of The Cleveland Brew Shop who would state on a daily basis that they would, 'quit their job if the could find a way to make beer for the rest of my life.'” Thus, Platform Beer Co. and their incubator program began. Homebrewers can apply to receive help from Platform to turn their homebrew side project into, one day, a brewery. I'm proud to live in a city where local businesses like Platform want to help other businesses get their start.
In the end, Platform is an excellent local brewery that should be on any beer lovers bucket list. The Bar League can now officially cross this one off of ours!
